National Cyber Alert System Cyber Security
Alert SA09-161A
Adobe Acrobat and Reader Vulnerabilities
Original release date: June 10, 2009
Last revised: --
Source: US-CERT
Systems Affected
* Adobe Reader versions 9.1.1 and earlier
* Adobe Acrobat (Standard, Professional, and 3D) versions 9.1.1
and earlier
Overview
Vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Acrobat
may allow an attacker
to take control of your computer. Adobe has released Security
Bulletin APSB09-07, which describes the issues.
Solution
Update
Adobe has released updates to address this
issue. Users are
encouraged to read Adobe Security Bulletin APSB09-07 and update
vulnerable versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat.
Disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader and
Acrobat
Disabling Javascript may prevent some exploits
from resulting in
code execution. Acrobat JavaScript can be disabled using the
Preferences menu:
* Open the Edit menu.
* Select Preferences.
* Choose JavaScript.
* Un-check Enable Acrobat JavaScript.
Disable the display of PDF documents in the web browser
Preventing PDF documents from opening inside
a web browser will
partially mitigate this vulnerability. This workaround may also
mitigate future vulnerabilities.
To prevent PDF documents from automatically
being opened in a web
browser, do the following:
* Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
* Open the Edit menu.
* Choose the Preferences option.
* Choose the Internet section.
* Un-check the Display PDF in browser check box.
Do not access PDF documents from untrusted
sources
Do not open unfamiliar or unexpected PDF
documents, particularly
those hosted on websites or delivered as email attachments. See
Cyber Security Tip ST04-010.
Description
In Security Bulletin APSB09-07, Adobe describes
issues that affect
some versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat. By convincing a user
to
visit a website and opening a malicious PDF file in the user's
browser, an attacker could execute code or cause a computer to
crash. Note that web browsers may be configured to open PDF files
automatically.
More technical information is available
in US-CERT Technical Cyber
Security Alert TA09-161A.

Technical Cyber Security Alert TA09-161A
Adobe Acrobat and Reader Vulnerabilities
Original release date: June 10, 2009
Last revised: --
Source: US-CERT
Systems Affected
* Adobe Reader versions 9.1.1 and earlier,
8.1.5 and earlier, and 7.1.2 and earlier
* Adobe Acrobat (Standard, Professional, and 3D) versions 9.1.1
and earlier, 8.1.5 and earlier, and 7.1.2 and earlier
Overview
Adobe has released Security Bulletin APSB09-07,
which describes
several buffer overflow vulnerabilities that could allow a remote
attacker to execute arbitrary code.
I. Description
Adobe Security Bulletin APSB09-07 describes
several
memory-corruption vulnerabilities that affect Adobe Reader and
Acrobat. Some of these vulnerabilities occur when Adobe Reader
and
Acrobat handle files with specially crafted JBIG2 streams. An
attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a
user
to load a specially crafted Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)
file. Acrobat integrates with popular web browsers, and visiting
a
website is usually sufficient to cause Acrobat to load PDF content.
II. Impact
An attacker may be able to execute arbitrary
code.
III. Solution
Update
Adobe has released updates to address this
issue. Users are
encouraged to read Adobe Security Bulletin APSB09-07 and update
vulnerable versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat.
Disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader and
Acrobat
Disabling Javascript may prevent some exploits
from resulting in
code execution. Acrobat JavaScript can be disabled using the
Preferences menu:
* Open the Edit menu.
* Select Preferences.
* Choose JavaScript.
* Un-check Enable Acrobat JavaScript.
Prevent Internet Explorer from automatically opening PDF documents
The installer for Adobe Reader and Acrobat
configures Internet
Explorer to automatically open PDF files without any user
interaction. This behavior can be reverted to the safer option
of
prompting the user by importing the following as a .REG file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.7] "EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00
Disable the display of PDF documents in
the web browser
Preventing PDF documents from opening inside
a web browser will
partially mitigate this vulnerability. This workaround may also
mitigate future vulnerabilities.
To prevent PDF documents from automatically
being opened in a web
browser, do the following:
* Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
* Open the Edit menu.
* Choose the Preferences option.
* Choose the Internet section.
* Un-check the Display PDF in browser check box.
Do not access PDF documents from untrusted sources
Do not open unfamiliar or unexpected PDF
documents, particularly
those hosted on websites or delivered as email attachments. See
Cyber Security Tip ST04-010.
Additional workarounds are available in
Vulnerability Note
VU#568153.

Hoyer Speaks at Press Conference on
the Automobile Dealer Economic Rights Restoration Act
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) joined Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD),
Assistant to the Speaker, Congressman Dan Maffei (D-NY), Congressman
Frank Kratovil (D-MD) and Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD),
and auto dealership owners for a press conference on the recently
introduced Automobile Dealer Economic Rights Restoration Act
of 2009. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:
We are here to defend small businesses
that are integral to our communities, and to the employment of
one million Americans: our auto dealerships. I want to thank
Congressmen Kratovil, Maffei, and Van Hollen for their leadership
in protecting auto dealerships.
We recognize that the Administrations
efforts have prevented the total liquidation of GM and Chrysler.
The restructuring process has meant the closing of unprofitable
dealerships. But at the same time, dealerships that have remained
profitable have been targeted as wellwith no reasonable
explanation provided to their owners.
To date, we have seen no evidence
that closing these profitable dealers will benefit the automakers.
But their closure does endanger the jobs of 100,000 Americans,
at a time when we can ill afford more job losses. No one in government
wants to make day-to-day decisions for the automakers. We look
forward to returning the government stake in the automakers as
soon as possible.
The dealers contracts should
be honored. And both parties should have the right to end their
partnership according to their contracts if they so choose. Thats
why I am supporting legislation introduced by Congressmen Kratovil
and Maffei that will help protect these dealerships from arbitrary
decisions to close them. For the sake of our communities
small businesses, I hope that our colleagues will support it.

Hoyer Statement on Shooting at the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum
WASHINGTON, DC House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on
the tragic shooting at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum:
I hope that we will pause tonight
and honor the memory of Stephen Tyrone Johns of Temple Hills,
Maryland, who died today defending the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum against an anti-Semitic gunman. Although the
gunman appears to have been a hardened denier of the Holocaust,
his crime only brings home the high value of that museum of remembrance,
which preserves the historical memory of a people whose communities
and institutions have so often been the target of terroristic
violence.
That memory is preserved, in ways large and small, by the
dedication of people like Officer Johns. In the wake of todays
killing, Mark Blumenthal, an online editor, shared the story
of his wifes visit to the Holocaust Museum: She arrived
at the end of a busy work day, in a rush, just a few minutes
before closing time. Unfortunately, given the late hour, they
had run out of the candles usually provided in the Hall of Remembrance
for visitors to light and leave in the niches of the outer walls.
Already feeling emotional
she broke down sobbing. A staffer
nearby immediately came to her assistance, asking if she needed
help. She explained, and the gentleman asked her to wait. He
soon returned with a candle, explaining with a conspiratorial
wink that he kept his own special supply for such emergencies.
In gestures as simple and kind as
that, and acts as courageous as Officer Johnss, we can
find ways to carry on the duty of memory. Todays crime
may have been intended to scare us away from the Holocaust Museum;
may it fail. May visitors return in force to bear witness to
todays loss and to the historical facts whose denial remains,
in the words of President Obama, baseless
ignorant,
and
hateful.
