National Park Service Launches On-line Travel Itinerary for Pierre and Fort Pierre, South Dakota

(Washington, DC) – The rich frontier and American Indian history of Pierre
and Fort Pierre, South Dakota is featured in the newest National Park
Service Discover Our Shared Heritage travel itinerary. The on-line
itinerary, which can be printed as a guide, is available at
http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/travel/pierre_fortpierre/

“The itinerary highlights 37 local sites listed in the National Register of
Historic Places and offers several ways to discover them,” said Acting
National Park Service Director Dan Wenk. “It provides a great way to learn
about and explore the authentic places that trace the history and
development of Pierre and Fort Pierre.”

Descriptions of each place highlight its significance and include
photographs and information on how to visit. Thematic essays provide
context for understanding destinations in the itinerary. Maps help visitors
plan what to see and do. A Learn More section includes links to additional
information on cultural events and activities, other things to see and do,
dining and lodging possibilities, units of the National Park System in
South Dakota, and a bibliography.

The Pierre and Fort Pierre itinerary is the 48th in the National Park
Service’s ongoing Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itinerary Series. The
series promotes public awareness of history and encourages visits to
historic places throughout the country.

The National Park Service’s Heritage Education Services and the South
Dakota State Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office
produced the itinerary, in partnership with the South Dakota Heritage Fund
and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers.

The itinerary supports the goal of South Dakota State Historic Preservation
Office's Central South Dakota Heritage Education Program to promote the
culture and history of Pierre and Fort Pierre. The program is funded by a
federal Preserve America Grant administered by the National Park Service,
Department of the Interior and by a donation from the Dakota, Minnesota and
Eastern Railroad.

HHS Purchases Additional H1N1 Vaccine Ingredients

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today that the department will
commit $884 million to purchase additional supplies of two key
ingredients for potential H1N1 vaccine to further prepare the nation for
a potential resurgence of the 2009 H1N1 virus.

"We recognize that preparedness is shared responsibility between
federal, tribal, state, local governments, private organizations and
individuals. We are doing our part to be as prepared as possible for the
impact that this infectious disease could have on our country,"
Secretary Sebelius said. "Vaccines may serve an important role in that
preparedness. The action we are taking today will provide flexibility in
a future immunization program, if a program is recommended."

The funds will be used to place additional orders for bulk H1N1 antigen
and adjuvant on existing contracts with Sanofi Pasteur, MedImmune,
GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis. The vaccine ingredients will become a part
of the pandemic stockpile, for use if a vaccination campaign is
necessary.

Antigen is the active ingredient in a vaccine that causes the human
body's immune system to develop antibodies that help fight an invading
virus. Depending on the results of clinical studies, adjuvant could be
added to a vaccine to boost the immune system's response and potentially
reduce the amount of antigen necessary for the body to recognize and
fight a virus.

In May, Secretary Sebelius directed approximately $1 billion to be used
for the development of a vaccine and for clinical studies to determine
dose level and assess the safety and effectiveness of potential
vaccines.

The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) in
the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response
established the existing contracts with these companies in 2004 as part
of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza.

More information about today's contract action is available at
https://www.medicalcountermeasures.gov/BARDA/MCM/panflu/factsheet.aspx.

For the latest on the 2009 Influenza A H1N1 virus, see www.flu.gov. To

BARDA is available at http://www.hhs.gov/aspr/barda/index.html.

HUD URGES FAMILIES RECEIVING DISASTER HOUSING ASSISTANCE TO APPLY FOR RENTAL VOUCHERS

Katrina/Rita Transitional Assistance Program Set to Close Out in August

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is urging families still receiving Katrina/Rita transitional housing assistance to contact HUD to ensure that they are considered for rental vouchers, which are not time limited. A toll-free number, 1-800-955-2232, has been set up to make the process as easy as possible.

HUD issued a reminder today that families will receive the final rent payment for a six-month transitional disaster housing program on August 1, 2009, covering the rent through August 31st. The program was created to give families who participated in the Katrina/Rita Disaster Housing Assistance Program (DHAP) more time to find permanent housing. While more than 10,000 families have already been given a HUD housing voucher, HUD is ramping up final efforts to contact families who may qualify for rental voucher assistance.

"While we are pleased to report that many families who lost their homes four years ago in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have found permanent housing, we are still concerned about many families," said Frederick Tombar, a HUD senior advisor for disaster housing programs. "We want families who believe they may be eligible for HUD's voucher program to call our toll-free number 1-800-955-2232 before this program ends in August."

The transitional disaster housing program began March 1, 2009 with approximately 30,500 families. To date nearly 10,000 families are being processed or have been given a HUD Housing Choice Voucher (HCV), which allows the family to rent housing from private landlords and generally pay no more than 30 percent of annual adjusted income. About 4,500 families declined assistance or were determined ineligible for the program because their incomes or assets are above what's allowed under the voucher program.

HUD has reached out to the remaining families, approximately 16,000, who have not yet transitioned. "HUD and the housing authorities want to ensure all families who are eligible to transition to the voucher program have the opportunity to do so before the program ends," said Tombar.

HUD and Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) created the Disaster Housing Assistance Program Katrina/Rita (DHAP-Katrina/Rita) in 2007 to provide housing assistance to families displaced by the 2005 Gulf Coast hurricanes. The program was designed to provide up to 18 months of housing rental assistance to families who were not previously HUD-assisted, but needed longer-term housing that FEMA could not provide. The program also provided families with case management to determine what additional social services families would need to fully recover and regain their self-sufficiency.

While nearly 200 housing authorities have been administering the program and working directly with families in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana, the majority of the families in the Transitional Closeout Program are concentrated in and around New Orleans.
