Correcting the Record on Fiscal Responsibility
Republican claims on fiscal discipline
go against their record of not paying for things and increasing
spending, as well as implementing economic policies that helped
create the deepest recession in generations. Democrats are taking
action on multiple fronts, with the support of a few Republicans,
to increase fiscal responsibility. As Democrats continue to work
with President Obama, we invite Republicans to put forward substantive
ideas and work with us on deficit reduction.

2010-2011 Open Doors to Federal Courts:
First Amendment and Social Media
The 12 th annual Open Doors to Federal Courts national initiative
is ready for use in courtrooms and classrooms. The annual program
gives high school seniors a positive first exposure to jury service
and motivates them to serve willingly when called. The theme
is The First Amendment and Social Media: Student Rights, Wrongs,
and Responsibilities. The strength of the program is that everyone
has the opportunity to participate fully. Students apply a landmark
Supreme Court case to a fictional scenario in which school administrators
claim that members of an unauthorized vampire club broke school
rules when they posted club news on the schools fan page.
Courtroom Program
The scenario stimulates lively courtroom arguments among the
students, a host judge, and two volunteer attorney coaches. Students,
selected by their teacher(s) in advance, use scripted talking
points with prepared judges questions. The judge also asks
spontaneous, follow-up questions to elicit the students
opinions. All other students serve as jurors who actively deliberate
in a virtual jury room in the gallery of the courtroom.
Ready-To-Use Materials
The program materials are posted on line for the courts and teachers
at http://www.uscourts.gov/outreach/programs/opendoors.htm.
Preparation for everyone involved requires no more than 30 minutes
of reading in advance, plus the time allotted during the courtroom
program itself. No additional research or reading is necessary.
Courthouse coordinators bring together a judge, two volunteer
attorneys, and a group of high school seniors, and the court
has an educational outreach program.

Hoyer Statement on President Obama's
State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader
Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight
after President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address:
Tonight, President Obama spoke about the reality of these
hard times, as well as the determination and optimism that have
helped America overcome hardship in the past--the same qualities
that are essential to our recovery today. Since President Obama
took office in the midst of an economic crisis, America has seen
significant progress, much of it due to the passage of the job-creating
Recovery Act. But far more work remains to restore the promise
this nation has to offer. President Obama understands that, which
is why job creation and strengthening the middle class were front-and-center
in tonights address.
President Obamas commitment to fiscal responsibility
was unmistakable tonight. He urged the passage of a pay-as-you-go
law, and he announced the creation of a bipartisan commission
to address our most pressing fiscal challenges at a time of high
deficits and debt. I hope that my colleagues across the aisle
will join us and lend their effort and ideas to the struggle
of deficit reduction.
Finally, the president reminded us that, even in hard times,
we cannot neglect policies that strengthen our future prosperity
and national security. One of those is health insurance reform,
which can reduce costs for families, provide more freedom to
workers, and create some 4 million jobs over the next decade;
for those reasons, the president reasserted his strong support
for reform tonight. It is also essential to pass Wall Street
reform that will bring accountability to our financial sector
and put an end to the reckless gambles that endanger the future
of millions of average Americans. Setting high standards for
education and creating jobs with clean energy are also crucial
to a recovery that is sustained and widely shared. And the president
also pledged continued vigilance against terrorism at home and
abroad.
I look forward to working with President Obama and my colleagues
in Congresson, I hope, both sides of the aisleto
make this much-needed agenda a reality.

Good afternoon,
At 9 p.m. EST tonight, President Obama
will deliver his first State of the Union address before a joint
session of Congress. Heres what you can expect:
The President will clearly articulate the steps we need to take
to continue to rebuild our economy and jumpstart private sector
job creation. Hell talk directly to you about restoring
security for middle class families after a lost decade of declining
household income, eroding retirement security and escalating
health and tuition costs. And hell detail his efforts not
only to better protect you and the American people at large,
but also to restore Americas alliances and standing in
the world.
Right after the Presidents address,
well be open for questions on WhiteHouse.gov. So watch
the President live at WhiteHouse.gov and stay tuned for a live
chat immediately following with some of the Presidents
top policy officials.
As you know, when the President took office
a year ago, he faced an array of historic challenges: an economy
in freefall; job losses averaging almost 700,000 a month; a middle
class under assault; two wars and badly frayed global alliances;
and a staggering $1.3 trillion budget deficit.
Tonight, the President will address the
progress weve made to rescue the economy, rebuild the middle
class, and restore our standing and leadership around the world.
In addition, hell outline whats needed to create
a new foundation for prosperity and deliver on the change you
and all Americans expect and deserve.
Tune in to WhiteHouse.gov tonight at 9 p.m. EST
to watch the Presidents State of the Union address, then
stick around to chat with some of his top policy officials.
Thank you,
David Axelrod
Senior Advisor to the President

Examples of How the Recovery Act Is
Working
Below are a few examples of how the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working to save and create jobs
for Americans across the country.
to watch a piece on how the Recovery Act is creating jobs through
a project to rebuild a pharmacy at a VA Medical Center in Pennsylvania
- and here's a highlight:
Thanks to money from the Obama Administrations stimulus
program, Fidelis has had an impressive first year. Despite the
weak construction market, the company has won three recovery
act contracts, totaling more than $3.5 million. The largest,
a $2.3 million pharmacy renovation project at the VA Medical
Center in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, build back in the 1930s....
The year-long projects will create roughly 40 jobs.
Also, viewers were asked the question,
Are you for or against the federal stimulus plan?
Below are a few responses read on the air today:
I am a Republican in Virginia and I am whole-heartedly
FOR the stimulus bill. What works for me? The Making Work
Pay credit, the Car Buyer Tax Deduction, the
Higher Education Tax Credit, the Energy Efficient
Home Tax Credit, are great programs designed to help put
and keep hard-earned dollars in my pocket. Great work Mr. President!
Cynthia, January 25th, 2010 11:30 am ET
In my hometown the stimulus has saved the job of my daughter's
teacher and 44 other teachers. It has put people to work renovating
a train station. It has also given middle class families a tax
cut. The stimulus is definitely working for me.
Larry, January 25th, 2010 11:20 am ET
[Y]ou're right to remind us that a year ago, all the experts
said we needed some sort of stimulus ASAP. I think it's important
to remember a year later that regardless of the successes or
failures we see now, the stimulus plan had an important stabilizing
psychological effect at the time. Rita, January
