Statement
by the Director of National Intelligence
The Intelligence Community received the President's message today
- we got it, and we are moving forward to meet the new challenges.
The system did not catch Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab and prevent
him from boarding an airliner and entering the United States.
We must be able to stop such attempts.
The Intelligence Community has made considerable
progress in developing collection and analysis capabilities and
improving collaboration, but we need to strengthen our ability
to stop new tactics such as the efforts of individual suicide
terrorists. The threat has evolved, and we need to anticipate
new kinds of attacks and improve our ability to stay ahead of
them and protect America.
We can and we must outthink, outwork and
defeat the enemy's new ideas. The Intelligence Community will
do that as directed by the President, working closely with our
nation's entire national security team.

Putting
It All in Perspective
Posted by Dan Pfeiffer on January 5, 2010 at 10:18 AM EST
With Congress now needing only to combine
ideas from the House and Senate versions of health insurance
reform into one final bill to send the President, there is an
unavoidable temptation among the media to focus on the five percent
of differences between the two versions, instead of the remarkable
95 percent the bills have in common. But, even as difficult work
does remain, it is important not to lose perspective of how far
we have come and how close we are to the enacting health reform.

Dec. manufacturing PMI highest in 25 months
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Activity in Britain's factory sector
showed a stronger-than-expected rise in December, pushing the
manufacturing purchasing managers index to its highest level
in 25 months, according to data released Monday. The CIPS/Markit
PMI jumped to 54.1 from a reading of 51.8 in November. A survey
of economists by Dow Jones Newswires had produced a consensus
forecast for a reading of 51.5. A reading of more than 50 means
a majority of managers saw a rise in activity, while a figure
of less than 50 signals contraction.

ISM
manufacturing index rises to 55.9% in Dec.
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded
in December for the fifth straight month, the Institute for Supply
Management reported Monday, further evidence that the recession
is receding. The ISM manufacturing index rose to 55.9% from 53.6%
in November. It was the highest in nearly four years. Economists
surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting a modest gain to 54.2%.
Readings over 50% indicate that more manufacturing firms said
business was improving than said it was worsening. In December,
nine of 18 industrial sectors were growing, ISM said. The new
orders index rose to 65.5% from 60.3% in November. The employment
index rose to 52% from 50.8% in November. The production index
rose to 61.8% from 59.9% in November.

Fed's
Duke: Bank lending may pick up this year
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Credit to homes and businesses could
pick up later this year, said Federal Reserve Board Gov. Elizabeth
Duke. In a speech to a business group in Raleigh, N.C., on Monday,
Duke said that nearly all of the bankers she has talked to in
recent weeks have said that their business plans for 2010 are
"based on achieving increases in loan volumes." Most
of the bankers expect that loan losses will peak this year as
the bottom of the housing market emerges and the recovery takes
hold, Duke said. A few bankers even reported renewed competition
for new loans, she added. The high cost of credit and its limited
supply are key factors behind the Fed's forecast of a sluggish
expansion in 2010. Duke has close ties to the banking industry,
having served as chairman of the American Bankers Association,
a top trade group.

Nikkei
225 taps highest level in over a year
TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Average touched
a high of 10,773.14, its strongest intraday level since October
2008, following gains on Wall Street. The index was up 1% at
10,759.15 in early trading Tuesday, while the Topix was up 1.1%
at 926.15. Shares of Elpida Memory Inc. were among the biggest
advancers, up 5.7%. The Nikkei reported that the firm's Taiwanese
unit Rexchip Electronics Corp. will invest some 40 billion yen
($433 million) to introduce state-of-the-art chipmaking equipment
and convert all its lines to Elpida's newly developed 45-nanometer
process dynamic random-access memory technology. Elpida will
also start output of an "extra-shrink" version of DRAM
chips at its Hiroshima, Japan, factory in the January-March quarter,
the Nikkei reported. Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi rose 0.1%,
and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 1%.

Financials
keep rally alive with modest gains
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of U.S. financial stocks posted
modest gains in early Tuesday trading, keeping alive a rally
that saw the group post its best performance in a month on Monday.
Consumer related financials including credit cared firms Capital
One and Discover Financial Services [s; dfs] led gainers. Investors
have recently been heartened by signs consumers are opening their
wallets a bit more amid optimism in some quarters that a sustainable
economic recovery is under way. Interestingly, on the same day
those firms led gainers, transaction processing firm Visa was
among the biggest decliners, following a downgrade from RBC analysts.
RBC cut Visa to outperform from top pick. In the broader financial
sector, the bellwether Financial Select Sector SPDR, which tracks
the financials in the S&P 500, rose 0.5%.

Friend --
Last Friday marked our passage into a new
year, and a new decade.
2010 will be a year of new, exciting challenges.
We'll be working hard with President Obama to finish the fight
for health insurance reform, put more Americans back to work,
and get our economy running strong. We'll fight to protect consumers
and our economy from Wall Street abuses, improve transparency
in Washington to elevate the voices of the American people, and
create a vibrant, clean energy economy. And we'll stand up for
the President's allies at the ballot box.
As we've always known, change this big
must come from the bottom up. Organizing for America was founded
last year based on your feedback, and OFA supporters are at the
core of everything we do.
So as we wrap up one year and prepare for
the next, we want to hear your reflections on our work together
in 2009 and how you want OFA to move forward in the new year.
Can you take a minute to fill out our quick survey
on what's next in 2010?
There's no limit to what we can accomplish
this year, if we keep working together.
Can't wait to get started:

Happy New Year,
