Intern Meeting/Internship Opportunity
Still Available
Hey Everyone,
I hope you all had a good break. I just
wanted to let those of you who may be interested know that there
are still internships available with Craig Lowe's campaign for
mayor of Gainesville. As of right now, Political Science, Advertising,
Public Relations, English, Sociology, and possibly History majors
can get 3 credits in their respective departments for interning
with us. If you are interested, I will be holding the first intern
meeting on Wednesday, January 6 at 6:30 in the Library West study
area across the hall from the Starbucks. I will be going over
specific requirements for the individual departments, as well
as the campaign's expectations. If you would like to intern with
our campaign, simply reply to this message or just attend the
meeting.
If your major is not listed above and you
would still like to intern, please attend the meeting, and I'll
see what I can do about getting you credit.
If you have questions, please reply to
this message, e-mail me at mitchell.norton@gmail.com, or call
me at (321) 704-4007.

Rock
Garden
Sun, 03 Jan 2010 23:00:00 -0600
This image of a cluster of rocks labeled 'Rock Garden' is where
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit became embedded in April
2009. The Spirit and Opportunity rovers landed on the Red Planet
in January 2004 for what was to be a 90-day mission, but which
has lasted 6 Earth years, or 3.2 Mars years. During this time,
Spirit has found evidence of a steamy and violent environment
on ancient Mars that is quite different from the wet and acidic
past documented by Opportunity, which has been operating successfully
as it explores halfway around the planet. Spirit used its navigation
camera to capture this view of the terrain toward the southeast
from the location it reached on the 1,870th Martian day, or sol,
on April 7, 2009. Wheels on the western side of the rover broke
through the dark, crusty surface into bright, loose, sandy material
that was not visible as the rover approached the site. Spirit
became stuck in an area near the left of the image's center later
in April. Image Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Eisenhower Presidential Library and
Museum
Message from the Director
Happy New Year January/2010
On behalf of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum staff,
I wish all of you a healthy and prosperous New Year. We had a
great year in 2009 at your Eisenhower Presidential Library. Our
program attendance more than doubled and we had a record number
of on-site researchers.
The success of 2009 would have been impossible without the support
of the Eisenhower Foundation and the commitment of many donors.
Their financial support led to highly successful programming,
such as the D-Day 65th Anniversary and the Ike's Abilene series
of programs. In particular, I extend a special thank you to Hank
Royer and the Jeffcoat Foundation for sponsoring the Gem on the
Plains exhibit. (The exhibit will be on display until February
21.) Additionally, special thanks are in order for Green Team
Abilene/Clay Center and Abilene Highlands, LLC, for their generous
financial support of the Ike's Abilene Grand Finale Fireworks.
As we enter the new year, plans are in the works for an excellent
2010. Expected highlights of the year will include commemorating
the 65th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day). A special
exhibit featuring German surrender documents will be on display
beginning May 7. It will then become part of a new exhibit in
the temporary gallery opening on May 24. This powerful exhibit
entitled "Eisenhower and the Righteous Cause: The Liberation
of Europe" will tell the story of the Holocaust, liberation
of the concentration camps, displaced persons, and the de-nazification
of post-war Germany. Public programs, a teachers' workshop, and
educational curriculum created in partnership with the Midwest
Center for Holocaust Education and the Lowell Milken Center will
complement the exhibition.
As we prepare outstanding programs for 2010, we hope you will
consider providing critical financial support. As many of you
know, the federal government does not fund exhibits, outreach,
and most public programs. Your gifts make the difference. For
instance, exhibits including the "Eisenhower and the Righteous
Cause" and traveling Smithsonian exhibits are funded solely
by your financial contributions. Necessary upgrades to the existing
galleries and creation of interactive displays are only possible
by your financial contributions. Ensuring the success of Kansas
Town Hall forums and Five Star Leaders experiential learning
program can only happen through your financial support.
If you would like to learn more about giving opportunities, please
contact me directly at karl.weissenbach@nara.gov or Mack Teasley,
Executive Director of the Eisenhower Foundation at martin.teasley@nara.gov.
Please visit our web site at www.eisenhower.archives.gov to learn
more about upcoming exhibits and programs.
We're excited about what 2010 will hold. What makes our jobs
so fascinating and enjoyable is that we're witnessing a marked
increase in President Eisenhower's military and presidential
reputation. It's no wonder that recent presidential ranking surveys
show President Eisenhower as one of our top ten Presidents. Thank
you for your strong support of the Eisenhower Presidential Library
and Museum, which is truly a unique gem located in the heart
of America.
Sincerely,
Karl Weissenbach, Director
Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum
