Kucinich to Investigate Fannie/Freddie
Bailout
Dear Friends:
The following blog post by Jane Hamsher
(Founder & Publisher - firedoglake.com) appeared today, December
30, 2009:
If the White House thought they could slip
the bailout of Fannie and Freddie through by announcing it in
a Christmas Eve news dump, think again. Dennis Kucinich just
released this statement:
"As Chairman of the Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the
Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, I'm announcing
that the Subcommittee will launch an investigation into the Treasury
Department's recent decision to lift the current $400-billion
cap on combined federal assistance to Fannie Mae and Freddie
Mac, opening the way for additional, unlimited funds through
the end of 2012. This investigation will include the role played
by Fannie Mae chief executive Michael J. Williams and Freddie
Mac chief executive Charles E. Haldeman in the decision, if any,
and will seek to ensure that the additional assistance is used
for homeowners and not Wall Street."
"As Chairman of the Domestic Policy
Subcommittee of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform,
I'm announcing that the Subcommittee will launch an investigation
into the Treasury Department's recent decision to lift the current
$400-billion cap on combined federal assistance to Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac, opening the way for additional, unlimited funds
through the end of 2012. This investigation will include the
role played by Fannie Mae chief executive Michael J. Williams
and Freddie Mac chief executive Charles E. Haldeman in the decision,
if any, and will seek to ensure that the additional assistance
is used for homeowners and not Wall Street."
"Many questions remain unanswered
regarding this move by the Treasury. Why suddenly remove the
cap? Indications are that Freddie and Fannie, even as millions
of Americans lose their homes, have used just $111 billion of
the $400 billion previously available to them. Is lifting the
cap on assistance a back-door TARP?"
"Additionally, I want to determine
whether Fannie and Freddie have a cohesive plan to buy up the
under-performing mortgages that remain on the books of the big
banks, at appropriate prices, and undertake a massive reworking
of the terms of the mortgages so as to stem the foreclosure crisis
that continues to plague our country. This new authority must
be used responsibly and for the benefit of American families.
This cannot be used simply to purchase toxic assets at inflated
prices, thus transferring the losses to the U. S. taxpayers and
acting as a back-door TARP."
On Christmas Eve, they also announced $4-$6 million compensation
packages for their top executives. But they'll start foreclosing
on homeowners again in January.
Fannie and Freddie have been corrupt cesspools
for years, a place where presidents of both parties parked friends
like Dennis DeConcini and Rahm Emanuel, giving them lucrative
spots on the board of directors as political payoff. As government
sponsored entities (GSEs) selling shares to the public, they
operate like hedge funds that socialize losses and privatize
profits. From the LA Times last year:
"This week ... news broke that until August, the lobbying
firm owned by McCain campaign manager Rick Davis was paid $15,000
a month by Freddie Mac, one of the mortgage giants implicated
in the current crisis (now taken over by the government and under
investigation by the FBI). Apparently, Freddie Mac's plan was
to gain influence with McCain's campaign in hopes that he would
help shield it from pesky government regulations."
It appears they kept looking. The Democrats have been too intimidated
by leadership to start looking into the utter corruption at these
entities, but Kucinich just doesn't care.
Sincerely.

Friend --
Looking back at 2009, it turns out you
were right.
Early this year, millions of you chose
to keep working together and create Organizing for America, to
build on the momentum of the Obama campaign, take on the defenders
of the status quo, and make change happen.
Special interests thought they could steamroll
you with hundreds of millions of dollars in lobbying and attack
ads. Meanwhile, you built a massive organization, driven by local
leadership, that reached out to millions of fellow Americans
and made your voices heard to Congress in record numbers.
In the coming year, our opponents will
make a final stand to block health reform and seek to defeat
many of the President's other crucial initiatives. And they're
already targeting those in Congress who are championing change.
So I wanted to take a moment at year's
end to reflect on everything you've built, and to ask for your
help one last time this year to hit the ground running in 2010.
Please
donate $5 to keep our organizing strong in all 50 states.
This has been a remarkable year for the
movement you've built from the ground up.
Beth Kimbriel, a mother of four from Richmond,
Virginia, has no formal political experience. But every week,
as an OFA "Community Organizer," she trains and manages
other volunteer leaders to organize effectively around the President's
agenda. Hundreds of her fellow OFA Community Organizers around
the country have already volunteered more than 200,000 hours
doing similar work. Thousands more have taken on other leadership
positions in every single state. And we're still growing -- nearly
a million people who had never volunteered for the presidential
campaign have signed up with OFA this year.
Supporters spread the word throughout our
communities, with more than a million conversations with neighbors
on the phone and at the doorstep, and 250,000 letters to the
editor about how President Obama's policies would help ordinary
Americans.
And when Congress was making crucial decisions,
you spoke out more powerfully than the special interests ever
could. In the last few months, you've made more than 1 million
calls to Congress -- including more than 300,000 on one amazing
day in October that created huge momentum for health reform.
Thousands of supporters attended town halls to counter the shouting
mobs and speak out in person. And you even held 37,107 events
in every congressional district -- bus tour rallies, phonebanks
and forums to inform your neighbors.
These incredible efforts have powered victories
on a wide range of issues. OFA volunteers provided a huge boost
to help pass the Recovery Act, President Obama's historic budget,
an expansion of children's health care, credit card and student
loan reform. Your voices helped pass a historic green jobs and
energy bill in the House, and the confirmation of the nation's
first Latina Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor, in the Senate.
And of course, you were instrumental in passing comprehensive
health reform through both houses of Congress for the first time
in American history.
With every phone call to a member of Congress,
every door knocked on a rainy day, every event held in a town
center, you've helped to push this country forward.
But with the special interests and their
allies in Congress fighting us for every inch, we need your help
again to keep our organizing strong in 2010. Can you chip in
$5?

Thanks for making it all possible,
Mitch

More
than 25,000 Additional White House Visitor Records Posted Online
Posted by Norm Eisen on December 30, 2009 at 12:36 PM EST
President Obama ordered earlier this year
that in December the White House would -- for the first time
in history -- begin posting White House visitor records as provided
in our new voluntary disclosure policy. Today we are delivering
on that commitment by posting more than 25,000 records created
between Sept 16 and Sept 30. The volume is enormous because we
are not just answering specific requests for records -- we are
disclosing thousands of folks who come and go here daily. We
will do this on a monthly basis, with the records for the full
month of October being posted in 30 days.

The
Same Old Washington Blame Game
Posted by Dan Pfeiffer on December 30, 2009 at 3:34 PM EST
There has been a lot of discussion online
and in the mainstream media about our response to various critics
of the President, specifically former Vice President Cheney,
who have been coming out of the woodwork since the incident on
Christmas Day. I think we all agree that there should be honest
debate about these issues, but it is telling that Vice President
Cheney and others seem to be more focused on criticizing the
Administration than condemning the attackers. Unfortunately too
many are engaged in the typical Washington game of pointing fingers
and making political hay, instead of working together to find
solutions to make our country safer.

JOINT STATEMENT FROM USTR, USDA ON THE
PROPOSED PASSAGE OF AN AMENDMENT TO TAIWAN'S FOOD SANITATION
ACT
WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2009 - The Office
of the United States Trade Representative and the U.S. Department
of Agriculture today released a brief statement regarding the
Taiwan Legislative Yuan's completion of initial steps toward
passing an amendment to Taiwan's Food Sanitation Act that bars
import of some U.S. beef and beef products. The following statement
is from Deputy United States Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis
and Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services
Jim Miller:
"We are deeply concerned and disappointed
by reports that Taiwan's Legislative Yu an has
taken initial steps toward the passage of an amendment to the
Food Sanitation Act that contains provisions that would unjustifiably
bar the import of certain U.S. beef and beef products.
"This amendment's provisions do not
have a basis in science or fact and thus in no way serve to protect
Taiwan's food supply. If passed, this amendment would represent
a new barrier to U.S. beef exports to Taiwan, and would constitute
a unilateral abrogation of a bilateral agreement concluded in
good faith by the United States with Taiwan just two months ago.
The Taiwan authorities should consider very carefully the impact
that passage of the amendment in its current form would have
on Taiwan's reputation as a reliable trading partner and responsible
member of the international community. Science and facts - not
politics or hyperbole - should govern our trade and economic
relations.
"The United States has implemented
a comprehensive set of measures, regulations, and practices that
are science-based, consistent with the guidelines of the World
Organization for Animal Health (OIE) for minimizing the risk
posed by BSE. The OIE is recognized by the World Trade Organization
(WTO) as the relevant standard-setting body for regulations relating
to animal health. These measures allow us to ensure consumers
in the United States, Taiwan and elsewhere that U.S. beef and
beef products --including offals and ground beef -- are safe,
and millions of American families enjoy these products every
day.
"We have worked closely with Taiwan
to provide all information necessary for Taiwan to fully evaluate
these measures in the preparation of the Department of Health's
final risk assessment, which determined that U.S. beef and beef
products are safe. In the interests of science-based trade with
Taiwan, the United States has provided research, data, scientific
experts, technical assistance, as well as detailed information
regarding U.S. risk mitigation measures, all of which have underscored
the safety of the relevant U.S. beef and beef products.
"After over two years of extensive
negotiations and scientific and technical exchanges, we concluded
an agreement, the "Protocol of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy
(BSE)-Related Measures for the Importation of Beef and Beef Products
for Human Consumption from the Territory of the Authorities Represented
by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT)," on expanded
market access for U.S. beef and beef products. The Protocol is
science-based, consistent with the OIE guidelines, the domestic
legal obligations of both sides, as well as the findings of Taiwan's
own risk assessment. The Protocol thus provides further assurances
that U.S. beef and beef products to be exported to Taiwan - which
are the same products that are consumed by Americans at home
- are safe.
"This is a serious matter that concerns
us greatly and we are monitoring the legislative process very
closely."

Dear Friend,
The Republicans are desperate to pick up
seats in the Senate so they can grind the legislative process
to a complete halt. They don't care about the consequences other
than their own political gain. To that end, they have declared
my seat as one of their top targets and they intend to spend
whatever it takes to win. We need your help to fight back.
Tomorrow is a critical fundraising deadline.
This is an important moment and we must demonstrate to my opponents
and the special interests and right-wing activists who fund their
campaigns that we'll be ready to fight back against every baseless
attack, every distortion and every assault on our values. I intend
to give this effort every ounce of energy I have - but to win
I'll need you to stand with me.
Contribute before
tomorrow's deadline.
Thanks,
Chris Dodd
