Microsoft Releases Security Advisory 954157

Original release date: December 11, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Last revised: December 11, 2009 at 2:06 pm

Microsoft has released security advisory 954157 to notify users of an
update that increases the security of the Indeo codec on Microsoft
Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003. The advisory states that the Indeo
codec running on these systems may allow remote code execution when
opening specially crafted media content. Microsoft indicates that this
update blocks the Indeo codec from being launched in Internet Explorer
or Windows Media player, which removes a potential attack vector.

US-CERT encourages users and administrators to review Microsoft
security advisory 954157 and apply any necessary updates or
workarounds to help mitigate the risks.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAJORITY LEADER

As Democrats continue to focus on creating jobs and strengthening our economy, a key part of our recovery is restoring oversight to Wall Street. For eight years, Republicans allowed Wall Street to engage in irresponsible and risky behavior that ultimately brought our economy to the point of collapse. By passing the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Democrats acted to bring accountability to Wall Street, protect Americans from the abusive and predatory lending practices that contributed to the crisis, and help ensure that taxpayers will never be asked to bailout big Wall Street banks again.

This week we also passed a package of appropriations bills that invest in our nation’s priorities. It makes targeted investments in the areas that will help grow our economy and get Americans back to work: infrastructure, job training, increased lending to small businesses, education, and health care. It also funds services to our nation’s veterans and ensures troops have the equipment they need to keep our country safe.

Next week, we will continue our work on the fiscal year 2010 appropriations bills with the Defense Appropriations bill. This bill puts our troops first, ensuring that we meet the needs of our troops in the field and their families here at home, as well as making critical investments in the health, well-being and readiness of our forces.

Sincerely yours,

STENY H. HOYER

U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces U.S.-Japan Agreement on Open Skies
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood today announced that the United States and Japan reached agreement on the text of a landmark Open-Skies aviation agreement, liberalizing U.S.-Japan air services for the carriers of both countries. The agreement was reached after five rounds of negotiations focusing on Open Skies, beginning in May of this year.
“Achieving Open Skies with Japan, a major U.S. transportation and trade partner, has been a long-standing U.S. goal and is good news for air travelers and businesses on both sides of the Pacific,” said Secretary LaHood. “Once this agreement takes effect, American and Japanese consumers, airlines and economies will enjoy the benefits of competitive pricing and more convenient service.”
Under the new agreement, airlines from both countries would be allowed to select routes and destinations based on consumer demand for both passenger and cargo services, without limitations on the number of U.S. or Japanese carriers that can fly between the two countries or the number of flights they can operate. It would remove restrictions on capacity and pricing, and provide unlimited opportunities for cooperative marketing arrangements, including code-sharing, between U.S. and Japanese carriers.
The agreement also would provide opportunities for growth of U.S. carrier operations at Tokyo’s Narita Airport and ensure fair competition regarding the new opportunities at Tokyo’s close-in Haneda Airport.
Although the 1952 U.S.-Japan aviation agreement was greatly expanded in 1998, many U.S. carriers serving Japan were still subject to restrictions on capacity, routing, pricing, and code-sharing.
Once the agreement is finalized, Japan will become the 95th U.S. Open-Skies partner. Both the United States and Japan must affirmatively act in order to put the agreement into effect.

CANADA NEWSBRIEF TICKER has been updated

Friend --

My name is Suzanne. I'm a legal secretary and an OFA volunteer here in New Mexico, and this is a bittersweet holiday season for me.

While I have some good news to share with my family and friends, there's one bad piece of news I need to share at the same time: Due to my skyrocketing health care costs, I've been forced to fall behind on my bills, and now my house is under notice of foreclosure.

So this year, when I sit down to write my family and friends, I'll also be sending a holiday card to my senators, letting them know that my wish this holiday season is health reform.

Will you send one too? As hard as my situation is, I know it's not unique. It's time that all of us who remember what this is really about speak up together and ask for change.

Click here to send a special holiday card to your senators, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Chuck Schumer, telling them that this year your wish is health care for every American.

Every day that we wait to pass reform is a day when more stories like mine could be told.

It's another day for someone to be forced into bankruptcy, or for the bank to come calling, because of spiraling costs.

And it's another day like every one of mine -- a day spent putting off doctor's visits for fear of what I'll find out, a day spent worrying that I'm actually about to be forced out of my home.

The urgent need for reform could not be clearer -- for me, for Americans who are hurt by the current system, and for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their health insurance coverage just since the Senate debate began two weeks ago.

So please take a moment today and send a holiday card to your senators, asking them to make sure they pass health insurance reform, this year:

Thank you,

Suzanne
