College Democrats of Connecticut Update
Dear Connecticut College Democrats,
Welcome back to Connecticut! I hope all
of your summers were fantastic and that you are rested and ready
for another exciting year of political action. The College Democrats
of Connecticut have hit the ground running and below you will
find a list of updates related to our work:
1. CDA Grants: The CDCT has submitted an
application to the College Democrats of America for funds related
to our lobbying efforts. During election time, College Democrats
across the state are pumped up and extremely active. Unfortunately,
once the polls close, membership and activity often drop off
dramatically. If we are awarded funds for lobbying projects,
the CDCT will be able to support chapters across the state in
legislative efforts during the off-season.
2. Political Contacts: I have spent a great
deal of time this summer reaching out to Democrats across Connecticut.
This year, the CDCT will continue to connect with CT politicos
and elected officials, furthering our goal of ensuring that students
play a major role in Connecticut politics.
3. Bloggers: Our blog is up and running
and now we need bloggers! If you are interested, let me know!
4. Connecticut Students for Dodd: In just
a few days, I will announce the formation of Connecticut Students
for Dodd, a state-wide coalition of students who plan to fight
for Senator Dodd in his upcoming reelection. If you know of individuals
in your organizations or on your campuses who would like to represent
the Dodd campaign at your school, please let me know. Join our
facebook group to state informed about all of our activities:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/group.php?gid=97287962627&ref=ts.
5. Prospect, CT Mayor's Race: The Charlie
Mallon for Mayor Campaign (http://www.mallon2009.com)
has reached out to us, asking for help during their upcoming
election. This race could give many students an opportunity to
gain some valuable canvassing experience and could demonstrate
our ability to help elect democrats here in Connecticut. If you
are interested in getting involved, please contact Tim Appleton
(tim.appleton@cox.net).
6. Fall Event: Look out for information
soon about our exciting fall event!
Good luck kicking things off this semester!
I hope to speak with all of you soon,
Ben Stango
President, College Democrats of Connecticut

Taking
the Pulse of Rural Health Care
from USDA Economic Research Service - What's
New
Rural households have higher rates of mortality, disability,
and chronic disease than urban households, after taking into
account the different age distributions of the two populations.
Rural households have less access than urban households to affordable,
nearby, high-quality health care. Adoption of new health information
technologies, promoted by a $19 billion allocation in the 2009
economic stimulus package, holds promise for improving coordination
among geographically dispersed health care providers.

Health
Status and Health Care Access of Farm and Rural Populations
from USDA Economic Research Service - What's
New
Rural residents have higher rates of age-adjusted mortality,
disability, and chronic disease than their urban counterparts,
though mortality and disability rates vary more by region than
by metro status. Contributing negatively to the health status
of rural residents are their lower socioeconomic status, higher
incidence of both smoking and obesity, and lower levels of physical
activity. Contributing negatively to the health status of farmers
are the high risks from workplace hazards, which also affect
other members of farm families who live on the premises and often
share in the work; contributing positively are farmers
higher socioeconomic status, lower incidence of smoking, and
more active lifestyle. Both farm and rural populations experience
lower access to health care along the dimensions of affordability,
proximity, and quality, compared with their nonfarm and urban
counterparts.

Income
Cant Keep Up with Health Care Cost Increases without reform
from AFL-CIO NOW BLOG by Mike Hall
Heres more evidence why health care
reform and controlling soaring health care costs is so desperately
needed to help working families.
In Indiana, for example, between 2000 and
2009, the cost of a family health care premium provided by an
employer increased 116.6 percent, but working families
median income rose just 14.9 percent. In Pennsylvania, premiums
were up 95.2 cent and income 17.5 percent.
Similar figures are repeated in state after
state, according to a new study by Families USA.
But heres the kicker: All that extra
money going to the insurance companies isnt buying more
coverage. Benefits have been reduced and workers are paying higher
deductibles and co-pays.
Says Ron Pollack, executive director of
Families USA:
Rising health care costs threaten the financial
well-being of families across the nation. If health care reform
does not happen soon, more and more families will be priced out
of the health coverage they used to take for granted.
The study also finds that between 2000
and 2008, the total percentage of U.S. firms offering health
coverage declined by 6 percentage pointsfrom 69 percent
of firms to 63 percentwith small businesses being the most
likely to drop coverage. The report warns:
The combination of stagnant wages and rising
health care costs is placing a growing strain on family budgets,
and many families have reached a breaking point. Quite simply,
Americas families are being priced out of health coverage.
As Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director
of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing
Committee (CNA/NNOC), points out, the United States is the only
industrialized nation in which health care is not a fundamental
right, but bartered for profit by a maze of corporations.
The result is about 45 million Americans
with no health coverage and tens of millions more denied medical
care because their insurer wont pay for it.
In a column for the London Times website,
Times Online, she says the current debate raging in the United
States must seem incomprehensible to many in the UK.
Union members continue to take grassroots
action for health care reform, mobilizing yesterday in California,
Colorado, the District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana,
Louisiana, North Dakota, Tennessee and Virginia at congressional
town hall meetings and other events.
You can join the debate, help counter the
