AGRICULTURE SECRETARY VILSACK TO HOLD RURAL COMMUNITY FORUM IN CALIFORNIA

WASHINGTON, August 24, 2009 - On Wednesday, August 26, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will hold a rural community forum in Modesto, Calif., as part of the Obama Administration's Rural Tour. At the forum, Vilsack will share information with local residents about the work USDA is doing to revitalize and rebuild rural America and ask local residents how USDA can be helpful in supporting and initiating other programs and projects to help the community participate fully and successfully in the new, 21st century economy. Vilsack will also highlight American Recovery and Reinvestment Act projects improving communities in California and benefiting people throughout rural America.

In June, President Obama announced that Secretary Vilsack will lead the Administration's Rural Tour to visit rural communities in states throughout the country. Secretary Vilsack is scheduled to lead Rural Tour events with a variety of other top administration officials over the coming weeks and months in Nebraska, New Mexico, and Ohio. This will be the seventeenth similar forum Secretary Vilsack has led since being sworn in, and this event follows rural listening sessions held in Des Moines, Iowa, Hamlet, N.C., Bethel, Alaska, St. John Parish, La., Blairs, Va., West Salem, Wis., Charlotte, Mich., Concord, N.H., Wattsburg, Pa., Danville, Ind., Geneseo, Ill., Harrodsburg, Ky., Ludowici, Ga., Portageville, Mo., and Brush, Colo.

USDA recently launched a new website and social media tools designed to enhance discussions and facilitate innovation for challenges facing rural America. All Americans can follow the Rural Tour's progress online at www.RuralTour.gov, on Twitter at www.twitter.com/RuralTour, or at USDA's Facebook fan page available at www.facebook.com/usda.

The USDA provides leadership on food, agriculture and natural resources and touches the life of every American. Secretary Vilsack and the USDA are working to promote a sustainable, safe, sufficient and nutritious food supply, ensure that America leads the global fight against climate change, and revitalize rural communities by expanding economic opportunities.

Statement of Attorney General Eric Holder Regarding a Preliminary Review into the Interrogation of Certain Detainees
Mon, 24 Aug 2009 14:05:42 -0500
I have reviewed the OPR report in depth. Moreover, I have closely examined the full, still-classified version of the 2004 CIA Inspector General’s report, as well as other relevant information available to the Department. As a result of my analysis of all of this material, I have concluded that the information known to me warrants opening a preliminary review into whether federal laws were violated in connection with the interrogation of specific detainees at overseas locations.

Young Democrats of Georgia State University 8/24 Announcements

Hi everyone!!
First of all, if you came to the meeting today, THANK YOU--we've never seen turnout that big! If you couldn't make it, please try to come in future. The more the merrier!

Second of all, if you're interested in helping out with November 9th's big gubernatorial debate, please reply to this email with your contact info (name, phone, email). We're going to need lots of help with this, but it's gonna be a HUGE event, something very exciting for YDGSU. It may also help you pick your favorite candidate for governor in 2010 if, like me, you're still undecided.

Third, tomorrow (August 25), please come visit us at the Student Organization Fair on Gilmer Street from 10:30 to 1:30. Good fun!

And next YDGSU meeting isn't for a long time (September 14) due to Labor Day, but don't worry, your lovely executive board is hard at work scheduling a fun social event in the interim. Watch this space.

This same message has been sent out via email, so sorry if you see this twice. Also, the info I gave out at the meeting today about volunteering and activism will be up at the Facebook group soon.

We're on Twitter now. @georgiastateyds will advertise upcoming meetings and other events. Follow us, we'll follow you back!

Don't forget to be awesome,
Emma Harger (VP for Membership)

Weekly Address: Myths and Morality in Health Insurance Reform
Posted by Jesse Lee

President Obama debunks the myths around health insurance reform, and discusses the public option proposal in which many of them are rooted -- but he focuses his address on the stark moral and historical turning point at which we find ourselves: "This is our chance to march forward. I cannot promise you that the reforms we seek will be perfect or make a difference overnight. But I can promise you this: if we pass health insurance reform, we will look back many years from now and say, this was the moment we summoned what’s best in each of us to make life better for all of us. This was the moment we built a health care system worthy of the nation and the people we love. This was the moment we earned our place alongside the greatest generations. And that is what our generation of Americans is called to do right now."

Vote Tuesday for Alabama Stonewall Democrats endorsees

The Stonewall Democrats have interviewed the candidates and asked may questions, including their views on discrimination and bullying policies, employment non-discrimination, LGBT families and equal benefit policies. In addition, candidates shared ideas and concerns specific to their district or the city, unrelated to LGBT issues. We're pleased to announce our endorsement of the following candidates. Please support all of these candidates and urge your friends to vote for them.

District 2

Carol Duncan
City Council

Councilor Duncan’s priorities include the environment, transit, economic development and working families. While searching for ideal solutions that sustain growth and balance, she embraced Smart Growth which changes the nature of dialog from a reactionary growth/no growth debate to proactive discussion of "how and where new development should be accommodated."

Virginia Volker
Board Of Education

Virginia brings years of education experience to the board and has a record of being a listener. She has advocated for an atmosphere of respect for teachers, students and parents, and has urged teaching students to resolve conflict without resorting to violence. She also supports teaching effective education of real subjects rather than just teaching standardized test material.

District 3

Howard Bayless (active ASD member)
City Council

It's time Birmingham had an openly gay council member; we have had enough of those in the closet! Howard is highly qualified and is running to improve Birmingham's crime rate, protect our neighborhoods and move the city forward. There is a clear choice, more of the same or CHANGE! Vote Howard Bayless!

Elisa Burns-Macon (active ASD member)
Board Of Education

Elisa is in it for the right reason.....The Children! With 23 years of front line experience in the classroom she knows what we need to do: Safety first, lower classroom sizes and accountability from the superintendent to the student. The teacher knows! Vote Elisa Burns-Macon.

District 5

Johnathan Austin
City Council
Appointed to the City Council in December 2008, Johnathan pledges to work on initiatives that unite Birmingham, make the city more technologically friendly, open more bike lanes, improve personal health, enhance the environment and create jobs. He is also determined to motivate his peers to get more involved in public service.

On Tuesday, August 25, 9:00 a.m. EDT, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will host a workshop available to the general public via an online webinar. The goal of the workshop is to examine existing and potential uses of broadband technology by public safety entities and ways in which broadband technology can enhance homeland security. The workshop will bring together representatives from the public safety community, government agencies, industry, and academia to discuss interoperability, redundancy, cyber security, 911, and pandemic response, among other issues. The first panel will focus on use of broadband applications by first responders to communicate emergency information and to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. This panel will also explore issues relating to interoperability, redundancy, and the cost of providing broadband access to public safety. The second panel will focus on the impact of broadband technology on particular homeland security issues, such as cyber security, pandemics, bioterrorism, and critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. The panel will also examine current and future public safety use of managed IP-networks.

To join the webinar, you will first need to register and also set up the required software on your computer prior to the event. Visit the following website to register and for more details: http://www.broadband.gov/ws_pshs.html.
