Grants.Gov Web Site Offers New Feature for Information on Applying for All ARRA Federal Grants

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today unveiled a new feature on
Grants.gov to help users find and apply for The American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant opportunities. Grants.gov contains
information about finding and applying for all federal grant programs.

The launch of this Recovery Act feature on the homepage of Grants.gov
will direct users to Recovery Act opportunities, other Recovery Act
resources, upcoming Webinars and links to www.whitehouse.gov/recovery
and www.recovery.gov.

"Grants.gov is the single government-wide source for information about
grant programs across the federal government," Secretary Sebelius said.
"Many agencies and departments across government are working together to
bring this information to the public. Now we are making it easier for
individuals to find critical and time sensitive Recovery Act grants from
all over government on the Grants.gov page with new technical
improvements to the site and an aggressive outreach campaign to the
public."

Working together across government to provide additional information to
new grant applicants, HHS will host on behalf of Grants.gov a Webinar
series on Aug. 13, 18 and 20, 2009. The Webinar sessions are targeted
towards potential grant applicants.

The Webinar series topics include: Introduction to Grants.gov and the
Recovery Act, Finding Recovery Act Opportunities and Registration to
Submit Recovery Act Opportunities. Each Webinar session will include
time for questions and answers.

All Webinars will be recorded and made available to view on Grants.gov
after each series is completed. More details for registration can be
found on Grants.gov in the new Recovery Act feature on the homepage.

HHS is the managing partner of the cross-agency Web site, which now has
information about more than 1,000 available grant programs involving all
26 federal grant-making agencies. These agencies together award more
than $500 billion in grant funds annually.

More information about Grants.gov is available at http://www.grants.gov.
More information about The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is
available at http://www.whitehouse.gov/recovery and
http://www.recovery.gov.

Hoyer Statement on New GI Bill

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today as the new GI Bill goes into effect. This bill makes available a full undergraduate education at an in-state, public university at no cost to veterans, service members, and members of the Reserve or Guard:

“Today marks the beginning of a new, richly-deserved opportunity for our service members and veterans. The new GI Bill that takes effect today is modeled after the GI bill that sent our World War II veterans to college. Back then, it gave many an opportunity they wouldn’t have had otherwise, and made them the backbone that formed America’s middle class. Today’s veterans deserve the same kinds of opportunities for success.

“With the new GI bill, this nation demonstrates our profound gratitude for our service members who answered the call to serve after 9/11. For years those service members and their families have had an enormous burden placed on them; giving them access to higher education is just one small way our nation can thank them for their sacrifice.”

Keith Olbermann to Expose Congressional Opponents of Universal Health Care Tonight!
Monday, August 3rd, 2009
We've just received an advance transcript of tonight's Special Comment by Keith Olbermann on his MSNBC show. It is nothing short of brilliant -- and if all of America were to hear what he is going to reveal tonight, we are certain the vast majority of Americans would be on the phone to their elected representative immediately, calling for an end to the private, for-profit, rip-off health insurance companies who have wrecked our country.
Here's a brief section of Keith's editorial tonight:
"Congressman Mike Ross of Arkansas. Leader of the Blue Dogs in the House. You're the guy demanding a guarantee that Reform won't add to the deficit. I'm guessing you forgot to demand that about, say, Iraq. You're a Democrat, you say, Congressman?

"You saw what Sandy Barham said? Sandy Barham is 62 years old, she's got a bad heart, and she's hoping her valves will hold together for three more years until Medicaid kicks in, because she can't afford insurance. Not just for herself, mind you. For her employees. She needs the public option. So do those six people who work at that restaurant of hers, Congressman Ross.

"And why should you give a crap? Because Sandy Barham's restaurant is the Broadway Railroad Café, and it is at 123 West First Street North in Prescott, Arkansas. Prescott, Arkansas, Congressman Ross. Your home town. You are Sandy Barham's congressman. Hers, Sir. Not Blue Cross's and Blue Shield's, even if they do insure 75 percent of the state and they own you."
And here's what Keith has to say about Senator Thune:
"Senator John Thune of South Dakota? You gave the Republican rebuttal to the President's weekly address day before yesterday. You said the Democrats' plan was for '... government run health care that would disrupt our current system, and force millions of Americans who currently enjoy their employer-based coverage into a new health care plan run by government bureaucrats.'

"That's a bald-faced lie, Senator. And you're a bald-faced liar, whose bald face is covered by… your own health care plan run by government bureaucrats."
Don't miss his show, live at 8pm ET. Rebroadcast at 10pm and 1am.

College Democrats of Wisconsin News & Notes

Hello, Democrats! I hope the summer is treating you well. The reason for this message is threefold.

01. To inform everyone that CDW Chair Analiese Eicher was elected Membership Director of the College Democrats of America at this year's CDA conference. Congratulations to Analiese!

02. To let everyone know that the CDW website is being designed as I type this. UW-L College Dem Steve Londre has been working on some template designs and we hope to have our new site up by the time school rolls around. The templates look phenominal and CDW is in good hands with Steve.

03. To encourage everyone to check out CDW on Twitter. With the website being worked on, I can start using our Twitter account as a way to keep in touch with everyone on news and notes pertaining to the College Democrats of Wisconsin and to the Democratic Party in general.

As always, if you have any concerns, feel free to message me on Facebook, e-mail me at millerpa@uwec.edu or call me at 920.246.0441.
