National Park Week Festivities Planned for April 18-26, 2009
3rd Annual National Junior Ranger Day to be held on April 25

Washington, DC- Scavenger hunts, craft demonstrations, puppet shows,
artillery displays, and nature hikes are just some of the hundreds of free
special events taking place in national parks during National Park Week. A
list of activities for this Presidentially-proclaimed week, celebrated this
year from April 18 through 26, is available at www.nps.gov/npweek.

“Throughout the country, from busy cities to remote wilderness areas,
national parks are places of history, recreation, and inspiration,” said
acting National Park Service Director Dan Wenk. “During National Park Week
visitors, especially children, are encouraged to discover their national
parks through many extra programs and special events."

More than 225 National Park Service sites will host youth-oriented
activities on Saturday, April 25 for the 3rd annual National Junior Ranger
Day. “The Junior Ranger program is the National Park Service’s signature
program for young visitors,” said Wenk. “Throughout the year children earn
badges and certificates after completing age-appropriate park related
activities at their own pace. On Junior Ranger Day many parks will have
additional special events and guided programs. Children will also receive
commemorative 2009 Junior Ranger Day pins and certificates.”

Among the many activities that day, young visitors can learn nautical
skills at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, participate in
military drills at Civil War sites, make dinner bells with a blacksmith in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, “Live Like a King” at Martin Luther
King, Jr. National Historic Site, interact with wolves at Petroglyph
National Monument, create Native American coup sticks at Washita
Battlefield National Historic Site, and learn how to “Leave No Trace” at
Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks.

One of the biggest fans of the Junior Ranger program is 13-year-old Barrett
Young. Young has earned more than 240 badges and says that completing
Junior Ranger exercises makes each park more meaningful.

“Traveling with my family around the country has allowed us the opportunity
to visit many national parks,” said Young. “I like the Junior Ranger
program because the activities and games make learning about parks fun. I
think even my parents have discovered things they didn’t know about parks
while they were helping me with activities.”

IRS.GOV Issue Number: TT-2009-71 Top Ten Facts about Amended Returns

Inside This Issue

Taxpayers who need to make a change or adjustment on a return they already filed can do so by filing an amended return. Here are the top 10 things every taxpayer should know about amending your federal tax return.
Taxpayers needing to amend their return use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
Taxpayers can use Form 1040X to correct previously filed Forms 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. The 1040X can also be used to correct a return filed electronically.
Taxpayers should file an amended return if they discover any of the following items were reported incorrectly: filing status, dependents, total income, deductions or credits.
Generally, you do not need to file an amended return for math errors as the IRS will be ale to make the correction for you.
You also do not usually need to file an amended return because you forgot to include forms – such as W-2s or schedules – when you filed; the IRS normally requests those forms from you.
Be sure to enter the year of the return you are amending at the top of Form 1040X. Generally, you must file Form 1040X within three years from the date you filed your original return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
If you are amending more than one tax return, prepare a 1040X for each return and mail them in separate envelopes to the IRS processing center for the area in which you live. The 1040X instructions list the addresses for the centers.
If the changes involve another schedule or form, attach it to the 1040X.
If you are filing to claim an additional refund, wait until you have received your original refund before filing Form 1040X. You may cash that check while waiting for any additional refund.
If you owe additional tax for 2008, you should file Form 1040X and pay the tax as soon as possible to limit interest and penalty charges. Interest is charged on any tax not paid by the due date of the original return, without regard to extensions.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this week turns the spotlight on the poorest country in the Americas: Haiti.

Remaking Rahm
The Washington Post notes White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel "is overhauling his image, becoming more valet than hit man, and his formula for moving Obama's agenda through Congress is beginning to resonate. Even Republicans concede that given Obama's early victories, thornier tasks such as landmark health-care, energy and education bills may not be out of reach."

Reid Posts Strong Fundraising Quarter
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) "knows Republicans have put a target on his back, but the Nevada Democrat has braced for what figures to be a tough 2010 re-election run by raising about $2 million in campaign funds since January," the Washington Times reports.
