Stimulus projects under budget, Obama says
Posted: 02:44 PM ET
By Lisa Desjardins
CNN
WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Barack Obama, trying to build economic optimism and political capital, declared Monday that his stimulus plan is “starting to work,” and that 2,000 transportation projects — costing much less than expected — are under way.

“Competition for these projects is so fierce and contractors are doing such a good job cutting costs, the projects are consistently coming in under budget,” Obama said Monday.

The president gave a rapid-fire list of savings: a bid for road work in Connecticut is $8.4 million less than the state budgeted, Louisiana has a project coming in $4.7 million less than expected, projects in Colorado are averaging about 30 percent under the state forecast and some bids in California are nearly half of what the state projected.

The administration says those savings will stretch the agency’s $48 billion-dollar stimulus budget. “Our recovery dollars can go further and we can do more projects,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, “This is great news.”

US, China, Russia agree to North Korea response

from China Economic Review - Daily Briefs
The US struck a compromise with China and Russia over the weekend on a statement condemning North Korea’s April 5 rocket launch and enforcing United Nations sanctions against North Korea, the Wall Street Journal reported. The draft statement, calls North Korea’s rocket launch a “contravention” of the UN ban on Pyongyang’s ballistic missile program and calls for a list of so-called “entities” that could have their assets frozen due to ties with the missile program. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council have been divided over how to respond to the missile launch, which North Korea claims was an attempt to put a satellite into orbit. The US and Japan wanted swift action that would have imposed new sanctions on North Korea. China and Russia feared driving North Korea away from the six-party talks aimed at ending the country’s nuclear program.

Weekly Address: President Obama Says Nations Must Unite To Overcome Global Challenges
In his weekly address, President Barack Obama extended his best wishes to everyone celebrating this week’s Passover and Easter holidays and called on nations around the world to come together to solve the current trials facing the world. On the heels of his weeklong trip overseas, the President said he believes it is important to acknowledge no single nation can solve global problems like a recession, international terrorism, climate change, or nuclear proliferation. But, working with other nations, the United States can lead the way in overcoming these challenges.

Readout of the President’s call with President Garcia of Peru
President Obama spoke with President Garcia of Peru to express his desire to deepen our bilateral relationship and work together to advance shared goals.

Weekly Address: Passover & Easter

This week the President discusses the multitude of problems and opportunities before the world through the prism of Passover and Easter: "These are two very different holidays with their own very different traditions. But it seems fitting that we mark them both during the same week. For in a larger sense, they are both moments of reflection and renewal. They are both occasions to think more deeply about the obligations we have to ourselves and the obligations we have to one another, no matter who we are, where we come from, or what faith we practice.

Recovery in Action: “Beginning to Percolate Nationwide”

..having made progress on an international response to the financial crisis in Europe, the President met with Treasury Secretary Geithner, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, FDIC Chair Sheila Bair, SEC Chair Mary Shapiro and Comptroller of the Currency John Dugan to start working on next steps here at home.

Today's environmental tip: Exercising outdoors? Regular exercise makes us feel great and keeps us healthy. Before you head out for your workout or run, check the air quality forecast for your local area. You can find out when air pollutants such as ground-level ozone or airborne particles are at acceptable levels where you live.

Michael David Fox broadcast a message from the DUCK CLUB DEMOCRATS

Club Meeting May 24, 2009 -- Guest Speaker Ameena Mirza Qazi of the Council on American-Islamic Relations

Our guest speaker for Sunday, May 24, is Ameena Mirza Qazi, Esq., staff attorney with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Recent revelations that the FBI has been infiltrating mosques to spy on mosque-goers have outraged many in the local Islamic community-- and potentially threaten the religious freedom and freedom of association of people of all faiths.

Ms. Qazi will talk about the important topic of government spying on Islamic religious centers (in particular the Islamic Center of Irvine), addressing violations of constitutional rights; the chilling effect on freedom of religion and association; and religious and ethnic profiling.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) is a Muslim civil liberties and advocacy group. CAIR’s vision is to promote justice and mutual understanding. CAIR’s mission is based on 3 core goals – enhancing understanding of Islam, promoting justice and empowering American Muslims.

Ms. Qazi is a graduate of UCLA and the Wayne State University Law School.

Please join us for this important and timely discussion.

Bring your questions, bring your ideas and bring your friends!
