China Unicom said its 2008 net profit grew 58% year-on-year because of a disposal gain from the sale of the company's code division multiple access (CDMA) business to China Telecom, the Wall Street Journal reported. The company's net profit reached US$4.96 billion, up from US$3.14 billion in 2007. China Unicom will also boost capital spending by 56% to US$16.1 billion from last year's US$10.32 billion to help ensure the effective roll-out of its third-generation (3G) wireless service. The company plans to launch 3G services in 55 cities by May 17, and aims to cover 284 cities by 2009. China Unicom Chairman and Chief Executive Chang Xiaobing did not disclose the company's 3G subscriber target nor what subsidies it would be offering purchasers of 3G-enabled phones.


Obama to visit China

US President Barack Obama will visit China later this year, the South China Morning Post reported. The White House announced the planned visit after Obama met with Chinese President Hu Jintao at the US ambassador's residence in London prior to the upcoming G20 talks. In the meeting, Obama told Hu that if North Korea goes ahead with its planned rocket launch, the US will refer the issue to the UN Security Council. A Chinese spokesman said that Hu did not say China would block such an action. The US and China also agreed to continue the China-US strategic and economic dialogue (SED) initiated during the Bush administration, with the first meeting to occur in Washington later this year.


China stocks at 7-month high

China's benchmark stock index rose to a seven-month high on Wednesday, Bloomberg reported. The Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks the bigger of China’s stock exchanges, rose by 1.5% to 2,408.02, its highest close since August. The CSI 300 Index, which tracks exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen, gained 1.6% to close at 2,548.22. Zijin Mining Group and Jiangxi Copper gained on hopes that rising metals prices will boost earnings for commodity producers. Jiangxi Copper advanced 2.6%, while Zijin Mining, the nation’s biggest gold producer, advanced 1.1%. China Shenhua Energy leapt 5.8% following a newspaper report which claimed the government may raise coal prices. However, the Wall Street Journal questioned the sustainability of Wednesday's stock market gains, noting that the index increase "flies in the face of corporate earnings."


China stocks continue rally

Financial services companies led Chinese stocks to a new seven-month high on Thursday as the Shanghai Composite Index (SCI) closed up 0.7% at 2,425.29 points, Bloomberg reported. China Construction Bank rose 1.6%, China Merchants Bank gained 2% and Ping An Insurance was up 2% after CITIC Securities predicted a rebound in the financial services companies' second-quarter earnings. The SCI is up 33% so far this year, the second-best performer of the 88 key stock gauges tracked by Bloomberg globally, on the back of optimism created by the government's stimulus plan. Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rallied 7.4% to close at 14,521.97, erasing its losses for the year so far. HSBC led the way, surging 15% on the back of better-than-expected economic reports in the US. Mainland property developer China Resources Land gained 14% in response to news of a recent uptick in housing sales.

Afghanistan and NATO

In a press conference after the NATO meeting today, the President began by congratulating Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen for his unanimous selection as NATO’s next Secretary General, while also recognizing Turkey for seeing past initial objections in the spirit of consensus. He thanked President Sarkozy of France and Chancellor Merkel of Germany for hosting him, and noted the significance of NATO’s two newest formal members, Albania and Croatia. But as everybody new, Afghanistan was the top concern of the meeting, and the President spoke at length about his new plan for Afghanistan announced a week ago and the agreements reached in the meeting
